Why External Frame Backpacks Are A Good Idea

You may want to buy yourself external frame backpacks, and with good reason. They have come a long way from the old style hiking backpacks that had those rickety external frames, the ones that were set one the outside, on the sides of the pack. Now they are situated more in the back, and have much more solid construction. The materials used for the packs themselves have also gotten much better, as well as the rivets and hardware.

Some people, mostly the younger generation may not even know what external frame backpacks are. These packs have frames that hold the hiking backpacks on the outside. They are connected to the person wearing them with shoulder straps and a waist belt. There is usually netting or some kind of strapping on the person side of the frame.

So, some of the advantages of framed backpacks is that they give the person wearing them a little more breathing room between the pack itself and the back. These hiking backpacks also distribute the weight of the pack more evenly over the shoulders and the hips, alleviating pressure on the spine. They can hold much more weight than an internal frame pack, and are used by people who go on long trips and need much more supplies. Because the frame is on the outside, it too can have items attached to it, adding more space for essential items.

Anther advantage of using external frame backpacks is that they are easier to attach tents, cooking utensils, and other extra equipment. This can be essential for people who hike and camp alone, or with groups when someone is needed to carry heavier loads. They can also have extension bars, so as your child or your needs grow, you can have a bigger back pack without having to buy a brand new one.

With the many advantages of framed backpacks, there are also some drawbacks. Because they have a higher center of gravity, these hiking back packs are not designed well for people who do a lot of activities besides hiking. If you bike or ski, then you may want to try an internal frame instead. Since the frame is on the outside of the pack, sometimes it may snag on trees and bushes. Because of space restraints on planes and trains, many people are now turning to internal frame packs, but the external frame style is still popular and sold on a regular basis.

Many great websites offer a wide range of external frame backpacks. Good hiking backpacks with external frames are going to cost you around one hundred dollars or more. It is essential that you look around for the best prices. It is also good to make sure that the seams are double stitched, and that the materials are waterproofed.

One example of outer frame backpacks is the Alps Mountaineering Red Rock. This is rust colored, and has a 2050 cubic inch capacity. The Alps company has a strong reputation in the backpacking community. This model has a sleeping bag area, top loading large compartment, and many outside pockets. The shoulder straps are completely padded, and can be adjusted to accommodate a number of different sized people. This is just one example of hiking backpacks with external frames, and sells for just under $100.
